Vicki takes a tumble
RANDAL & VICKI MATHENY | SÃO JOSÉ DOS CAMPOS (SP) BRAZIL | YEAR 42
Vicki took a tumble while out walking May 10. She broke her right shoulder and skinned up head, lip, hands, and arm. Her arm is in a sling for several weeks. Bone starts healing after three weeks. Then more weeks of healing and afterwards physical therapy.
This has required adjusting our schedules. The teaching moment in the Taubaté congregation, scheduled for May 23, was put off for another time. I look forward to teaching about the components of the Gospel later perhaps.
I was invited to participate in the revision of the Portuguese edition of the Easy-to-Read Version, called the Versão Fácil de Ler. It has gained good acceptance among our people here. I’m waiting for the call to meet with the group of revisors. (Photo: I hold up a copy of the VFL while speaking at the Festival in May.)

For the June edition of the monthly newsletter for the Guarulhos congregations, “Amo Jesus” (I Love Jesus), I was asked to contribute an article. See the image below for a recent issue, pages 2-3:

This month’s issue was a free theme, so I wrote “Are You the Person?” It is an appeal to the reader who wants to be different from the religious world in general and from the worldly church, like was seen in Corinth. Among other things I wrote:
If you have already grown weary enough of ritualism, complacency, opinionisms, and superficial religiosity within the church, Jesus invites you to separate yourself from the lukewarm and worldly, to embrace the challenge of life in him, without looking back and without holding back any effort.
In other news:

- I attended the science fair of Pedro and Karol’s daughter Luara on Saturday morning, May 30. (Photo above: Luara showing one of her projects at her school.)
- May 27 I picked back up the Wednesday night studies in the Northside congregation based on David Pharr’s book, The Beginning of Our Confidence. I mention this in my June 2nd editorial on Forthright.
- I started blogging again with my personal domain: randalmatheny.com.
Please pray:
- Pray that Vicki’s shoulder will heal quickly and completely.
- Tatiane has been attending the Sunday and Wednesday meetings again, after finishing up her cancer treatment. Pray she remains faithful.
- The Southside congregation is looking to move to new rented quarters.
- Franciele was a sister in Christ, divorced, with two small children, who passed away from cancer Sunday, May 31, in southern Brazil. Pray the children are taken care of.
- Several other family members are having health issues. Pray for my mom’s health, and for Leila as well.
